Chapter 29: Things to do when you're in Vang Vieng

after hitch hiking all the distance from Luang Prabang, just outside of Vang Vieng, we wake up in Suanmone Phoudindaeng Organic Farm

geese and goats and pigs and bugs and butterflies are all welcoming us

and Ward, a Belgian volunteer worker is welcoming us to recruit into his program of support English education in the villages (photos by Miguel)

At Pakpho school the students practice composition using ‘if’. “If I want to travel to Japan, can you help me?” “I am unhappy if you leave away from me.” Teaching only for a week made me feel so important, so welcome. I hope many teachers with sincere heart will participate this program in future.

After learning the lyrics of John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’, Lek and Kamsai, my ever-trusted assistant and 19 year-old student discuss the needs of good English education program in the village.

Meanwhile the town of Vang Vieng’s intelligence is deteriorated. This restaurant openly advertise “We sell Marijuana.” in Japanese. And around the corner are restaurants where people spend whole afternoon sitting facing all one direction to watch the DVD rerun of ‘Friends’

Carlos tries to have his dreadlocks trimmed… Don’t!

"Carlos, move forward!" "I cannot!" the flow of Nam Song river is rapid, impossible to swim upstream or even to walk across.

Across the river is a vast field of plantation with backdrop of wall like mountains. There lives this family of farmers in a littlest house I’ve ever seen. Day after day she’s observing our peculiar Farang life.

over this side of the Nam Song river, starting 1 or 2 in the afternoon, one after another Tuk Tuks like this one arrive loaded with Pot head drinking Farangs and Rubber inner tubes of tires.

They descend down to the shore all excited.

Welcome to ‘Tubing’, whoever invented it, it’s the most popular tourist attraction of Vang Vieng.

Listening to loud music blasting from all the bars on the shore, Farang can sit back relax on the tube with beer in one hand, a joint in the other floating down the Nam Song for 3km back to Vang Vieng.

“Mama, there go those Farangs again!” Pack of Geese escape the madness.

“Why can’t I do the Tubing?” Papa goose feels jealous.

Thanks for Tubing today, come again!
