Chapter 12: Sangwalwit School project

With great help from Lek, and Ms. Nid of the Sun Hut, I was able to initiate a Youth benefit project to support rural village’s youth education.

Local officers lead Toshiro, Lek and Ms. Nid to survey the school in the village of Ban Mueng Noi. An hour and a half of mountain dirt road is the most difficult drive I have ever done.

Local officers get impressed by my motorcycle skills. Up and down the steeps, left and right the sharp curves… “After all it’s us Japanese who made Honda.”

At Mueng Noi, the village leader take us to the church. About 400 people from this village including the village leader are Christians.

With Ms. Chiraporn, head master of Sangwalwit school (3rd from Left) on our survey day. The school seemed more equipped and modern than I expected. ‘Shouldn’t we look for a school that’s in greater needs?’ I wonder, then one of our team member, leading sponsor of the project Mr. Nid from the Sun Hut (2nd from Right) says to me ‘Toshiro, your desire is to give, and no matter where you are or who they are, you can always find so much that you can give them.’

So next weekend, March 22, we are joined by my friend Ryan, Lek’s friend Cha and his university students from Chiang Mai, all climb up in the back of pick-up, hit the curvy mountain road again. We pass the truck full of villagers commuting to Pai on our way.

Our ‘ice breaking’ orientation start with games, dance and sing-alongs.

Assisted by Pom and Ice, Toshiro teaches guitar, flute and percussions. Slowly students wipe off their shyness and start showing their curiosity into the music.

Ryan teaches ‘Thank you.’ and ‘You’re welcome.’ by handing a white rose. The Pennsilvania born Californian, ever-present big heart from our music collaborations in Pai, has worked in the USA giving public speech for non-profit organization, and also has taught English.

He has just made up a quick song for the students to learn English with. “Hello, hello, hello, how are you?” “I am fine, thank you. Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye.” He and assistant Puan demonstrate a short conversation of Hello and How are you, then encourage the students to join.

In another classroom Pongnang and Diu explain the global warming to the students.

We take after school walk on the road that goes through Ban Mueng Noi village.

Cha’s Chiang Mai students decided to take a bath in Pai river, while village leader washes the red dirt from today’s long drive. The first day of the project ends.

And we of course drink, in a school ground!

Next day Toshiro teaches students how to make instruments from bamboo and rice grains.

Everyone gets into decollating and coloring their bamboo instruments. How pretty!

While they focus on their drawings…

The team carefully display the gifts

Closing the day with sing-along, with the instruments they’ve just made!

Gifts

Thank you for the fun! We hope to do this again.

Jump!

Before heading back to Pai, We stop by another village Ban Huey Hok, where a portion of our donated materials are transported to.

Climb up on the pick-up, oh no! the dirt road again!
