Chapter 41: One last show at Adhere Blues Bar

by Banglamphu canal on Samsen road, the first bar on the left after you cross the canal, is Adhere the 13th Blues Bar, packed with a mixed crowd of Thais and farangs every night

inside of the narrow house, tables line up on one side, and a drum set, microphones and amplifiers on the other, leaving just enough path to fetch your drinks, or use the loo

Ms. Non fixes you a drink just right

as Mr. Pong’s brown Telecaster quietly waits for another night’s excitement

‘Welcome back’ they say to me, one of my important homes in whole Southeast Asia

‘Pong, where did you find this boy?’ 12 year old Kantruem is form the Caravan Noi, the second generation of legendary Caravan (see Chapter 9) and his Stratocaster is nicely trembling and dry, a good combination with Pong’s clean aroma sound

you bring your harps and you’re on. Pong will gesture you when to take solo. However year after year, this cozy ‘lonely-planet-ed’ bar attract more and more farangs and many who want to join in. Look at the wall just outside of the bathroom, the photos show many musicians –some I recognize from Koh Chang or Pai- on a variety of instruments

artists, writers, professors, poets and many musicians themselves are among the audience. The house’s most popular Miss Georgia of Georgia’s Blues Band

Whim the guitarist from Hoochie Coochie Band (see Chapter 37) has his own acoustic project here once a week. He’s a soon-to-be daddy!

40+ years of playing music, Khun Hanz, from Netherlands talks to some pussy at the bar. He is being so generous to give up his show time for my last performance

‘Can you play Thursday?’ I recruit Ke and Wan, ever demanded rhythm section from the house band. If they are not behind the drum kit with a bass and the sticks, they are out front silently smoking menthols and sipping whiskey

so Thursday May 8th, flyers are posted on the streets, I have one last show

my Brazilian brother Miguel came back from Siem Reap to reconnoiter and help my first acoustic set. Really love opening the set with the breezy instrumental bit of ‘Daydream’

My own self-tribute set. ‘Every Two Years in June’ was ever played for the first time here 14 months ago, making Erika Austin Bowman wish that someone would write a song like that for her someday. So 9 months later I wrote her ‘Austin’ (see http://ricefarmtour2007.blogspot.com/2007/03/best-blues-bar-in-bangkok.html)

intermission with a baby drummer

and Toshiro is back with Ke (Bass) and Wan (Drums) –not so much of Panic Farm ‘Sorry Brusko, it’s just that, I don’t think the character of Panic Farm will be suitable for the place like this…’

Khun Hanz brings down the house with his mesmerizing fingering. Thank you so much!

and now, ladies and gentlemen, long awaited headliner of the house… Please welcome Miss Georgia and her Blues Band!

Mr. Pong in a hot and smooth action

Khun Hanz never ceases to be creative

Toshiro joins back with Harps a little bit

How many sets did you play to night?

good music and good friends, what a wonderful world!

Panic continues down the street and the bar got a phone call of complaint! Gomenne!
