Chapter 38: Lost in Siam Square

Two levels of elevated train tracks run parallel to the major avenue of Thanon Sukhumvit, causing the worst traffic jam

we are in one of the most modern consumer’s playgrounds I’ve ever seen. It’s not Shibuya in Tokyo, it’s not Times Square in New York, it’s Siam Square in Bangkok

The entire area of three to four large blocks by the avenue are all complex of shopping centers, all connected by skywalk to each other and to the sky train, here in the photo above, in front of Central World shopping center, two temples –one for Hinduism and one for Buddhism- stand with the backdrop of summer bargain billboard, serenaded by the speakers from large overhead screen

people come and give incenses and pray… for what? What a place for the spirituality and consumerism to co-exist

and people from all different culture, race and nationality come here to spend their money to fulfill their materialistic desire

inside those shopping centers is like a maze, with multiple stages of escalators. Lek has a friend of hers once literally ‘lost’ here, not being able to find her way back

what a name for a shopping center!

Siam Paragon shopping center has showrooms for Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari, on upper floors, and the service golf carts drive around to take customers to remote spots

I rarely take satisfaction by eating at franchised restaurants, Thailand’s nationwide chain MK restaurant, however, is so systematic that it is actually lot of fun eating there. When you enter the store they give us tickets indicating the table number, we take stairs to third floor looking for the table #338

as soon as we find our table two waitresses come to us with handheld devices taking our order, once Lek lists up several barbeque dish the one waitress leaves to get those dish ready while the other finishes taking the rest of order. It doesn’t take seconds from the time when we finish ordering ‘til we see our food coming

at every hour the speakers of all the floor blast loud disco beat, and staff would all stop whatever they are doing and start dancing together. Some customers are taken by surprise, some amused, few annoyed. Lek tells me it’s the policy of the MK owner that it must be good to exercise their body after hours of standing and working on their feet

the best part of this amusing dinner to me was oddly enough the bills, and that is not because Lek kindly treated me this dinner, but when she finished paying, they handed her two receipts, one says the price we paid, and the other one lists all the itemized nutritious facts we consumed. So, here on this dinner, we ate for 723 bahts between two of us, and that includes 837.2 k calorie, 57.3 g of Protein, 46.5 g of Carbon Hydrates, 37.9 g of Fat, 8.8 g of Fiber, 1.5 g of Sodium, 362 mg of Calcium, 9 mg of Iron. and it says ‘No MSG!’

out in front of Central World is outside venue for after-shopping customers. ‘Beer Tower’ is popular in place like this

‘Quickly’ says this drinker to me ‘I’m not going to wait to finish my tower for your photo.’
